Eyelid surgery is a common cosmetic procedure that improves the appearance of aging, tired-looking eyes. For some patients, the procedure also restores vision impaired by loose, sagging eyelid skin.
If you are considering eyelid surgery, you are probably curious about what to expect during the recovery period. Although every patient recovers slightly differently, there are some universal aftereffects and a general recovery timeline.
Read on as Dr. Mohammed Alghoul shares an overview of what happens after eyelid surgery.
Common Aftereffects
After eyelid surgery, it is common to have a tight or sore sensation in the lids. Mild to moderate swelling and bruising around the eye area can also be expected after surgery. After surgery, vision may be slightly blurry due to antibiotic ointment, which is applied to keep the lids lubricated and prevent infection. The majority of these aftereffects should subside within approximately two weeks, although residual swelling may take four to six weeks or more to completely disappear.
If you experience discomfort after eyelid surgery, you can easily manage it with over-the-counter pain relievers or prescription medication. Serious pain after eyelid surgery is extremely rare and should be reported to Dr. Alghoul.
Returning to Normal Activities
For the first few days after surgery, Dr. Alghoul recommends prioritizing rest and relaxation as much as possible. You should nap when you feel tired and limit visually intense activities, such as prolonged periods of computer work or reading. Avoid any activities that could raise your heart rate or blood pressure (e.g., heavy lifting, bending or straining). You can shower as soon as the day after surgery, as long as you avoid getting your eyes wet.
Most patients feel confident enough to go out in public and return to work approximately seven to 10 days after surgery. If your job is physically demanding, Dr. Alghoul will advise when to return. Wear sunglasses whenever going outside to protect your healing eyes.
Continue to avoid physically strenuous activities such as heavy lifting and vigorous exercise for at least three to four weeks. Walking or gentle stretching is permitted as soon as you feel ready.
You will have several follow-up appointments scheduled with Dr. Alghoul to monitor your healing progress. Be sure to attend every appointment and bring a list of questions or concerns for the doctor to address.
Enjoying Your Results
You should notice an improvement in the firmness and contour of your eyelids soon after surgery. As the swelling and bruising subside, your results will become more apparent. Approximately six weeks after surgery, your final results should stabilize. At that point, you will see your patience rewarded with refreshed, youthful-looking eyes!
