What is the Difference Between Septoplasty and Rhinoplasty?

The term “nose job” is an umbrella term that includes two specific procedures: septoplasty and rhinoplasty. While both involve correcting nasal irregularities, there are several differences between the two procedures. In this blog post, Chicago cosmetic surgeon Dr. Mohammed Alghoul discusses the two procedures in detail, including when each is appropriate.

What is Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is a functional procedure that corrects a deviated septum. The nasal septum is the wall of cartilage and bone that separates the two nostrils. In some cases the septum may be deviated or displaced due to a congenital defect; in other cases the problem is caused by injury. A deviated septum can cause a range of problems, including chronic stuffiness, headaches, snoring and difficulty breathing and sleeping. When these problems interfere with everyday life, septoplasty may become necessary.

During septoplasty, the plastic surgeon can remove septal cartilage and/or bone and/or place a graft in order to straighten the septum and provide stability.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that can correct a range of aesthetic or functional concerns. Many of Dr. Alghoul’s patients seek the procedure in order to resize an overly large nose, an unattractive bump, uneven nostrils or a bulbous nasal tip.

There are two approaches to rhinoplasty: the open approach and the closed. The open approach makes an incision across the strip of skin separating the nostrils and additional incisions inside the nostrils. The closed approach involves only making incisions inside the nostrils. Dr. Alghoul can discuss these two approaches in more detail with you and make his recommendations on which one is best for you.

Can Septoplasty and Rhinoplasty Be Combined?

Dr. Alghoul frequently performs the two procedures together in order to restore proper breathing function and achieve a more beautiful nose shape. During your initial consultation, Dr. Alghoul will examine your nose and discuss your aesthetic concerns and goals with you in order to determine if septo-rhinoplasty is appropriate for you.
