If you are considering facelift surgery, it’s important to have the right expectations. Have you thoroughly researched the procedure? Dr. Mohammed Alghoul is a Chicago plastic surgeon that has helped patients rejuvenate their appearance through facelift surgery. Here, he breaks down five of the most important things to know about facelift.
What Facelift Treats
Facelift is a facial rejuvenation procedure that improves the appearance of wrinkles and lines in the midface area, deep creases around the mouth, jowls (sagging, loose skin along the jawline), and loss of elasticity and muscle tone in the face and neck. Facelift tightens the facial and neck skin, excises excess skin and, if necessary, redistributes fat for a more balanced and youthful facial appearance. With facelift, you can expect to look 10 or more years younger.
What Facelift Doesn’t Treat
Although facelift is considered the gold standard in facial rejuvenation, it cannot treat all signs of facial aging or sun damage, including brown spots and uneven skin pigmentation. Additionally, the procedure cannot fully change the position or shape of your eyelids or eyebrows. If you have droopy eyelids or brows, Dr. Alghoul may recommend combining your facelift procedure with eyelid surgery or brow lift in order to address those areas of concern. For signs of sun damage, such as brown spots and uneven skin pigmentation, Dr. Alghoul may recommend a non-invasive skin resurfacing treatment.
Incisions and Scarring Are Inevitable (But Concealed)
As with any surgical procedure, there are incisions involved with facelift. But rest assured, a highly trained and talented facelift surgeon will know how to strategically place the incisions in areas where they will naturally be concealed (typically behind the ears). Your post-op recovery is also an important factor on how well your scars heal. For instance, you must wear sunscreen and cover up your incisions and scars in order to protect them from the sun. Prior to your procedure, Dr. Alghoul will provide you with a list of other recovery guidelines to follow.
It’s only normal to be excited to show off your younger-looking, more radiant appearance immediately after surgery. However, a successful recovery for any surgical procedure requires plenty of rest. The length of recovery varies by patient, but most patients are able to go out in public about a week and a half to two weeks after facelift surgery. By this time, most of the post-op swelling, bruising and other normal post-op side effects dissipate. Once you take the proper time to heal, you will be ready to show off your rejuvenated appearance!
The Surgeon’s Experience Is Key
Ultimately, the success of your facelift results depend on your plastic surgeon’s technique and knowledge of facial anatomy. A board-certified plastic surgeon with years of experience has the precision and skill it takes to achieve the most natural results. Before signing up for surgery, make sure to discuss with your surgeon the procedure in detail since there are different types of facelift surgery.
