Can Eyelid Surgery be Covered by Insurance?

Eyelid surgery in Chicago is one of the most popular facial rejuvenation procedures performed today. During the procedure, wrinkles and fine lines on the upper and lower eyelids are smoothed out while loose, heavy skin is removed. The result is a softer and youthful appearance.

When performed for cosmetic reasons, upper eyelid surgery cannot be covered by medical insurance. However, if the procedure is deemed medically necessary, it can be covered by insurance. Chicago plastic surgeon Dr. Mohammed Alghoul explains more in this blog post.

Vision Impairment

Eyelid surgery may be considered to be a medical necessity if the skin on the upper eyelids impairs vision. Heavy, excess skin on the upper eyelids can droop so low that it hangs over the eyelashes. Simple activities like reading become difficult while other tasks, like driving, become dangerous. Upper eyelid surgery can restore unobstructed vision by removing excess tissue, fat and skin on the upper eyelids. Following the procedure, everyday tasks like reading become more comfortable and enjoyable.

Upper eyelid surgery can also improve other symptoms of physical discomfort. Excess skin on the upper eyelid can rub up against other skin, leading to painful chafing, irritation or rashes. Patients with heavy skin on the upper eyelids can also have headaches and strain in the eye and forehead areas as they struggle to open the eyes properly. Although these symptoms are typically not considered to be medical emergencies, eyelid surgery can be helpful in relieving these symptoms and thus improving a patient’s quality of life.

In order for upper eyelid surgery to be covered by medical insurance, a visual field test must be performed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist.  During the test, the doctor will document restriction in visual field. This documentation will need to be submitted to your insurance provider. Cosmetic lower eyelid surgery is not covered by insurance.
