Breast reduction is a procedure that reduces the size of the breast by removing the excess breast tissue and skin. It is indicated in women with large, heavy breasts who desire a smaller size for a variety of reasons. Surgery typically involves making incisions around and under the areola. After the excess tissue is removed, the breast is reshaped and the nipple is repositioned on the center of the new breast. The procedure has a fairly high satisfaction rate among patients who are usually bothered and restricted by the weight of their breasts.
Breast enlargement can be present at a young age and usually worsens with pregnancy. As the breast enlarges it stretches the skin and pushes the nipple to a low level. The heavy weight also causes neck and shoulder pain and grooving from the bra straps.
During consultation, a thorough breast evaluation is performed to determine the shape, volume and measurements of your breasts. The surgical procedure and proposed scars needed to accomplish the goal will be discussed in detail, including whether breast lift will be combined with the breast reduction procedure. Breast reduction may be covered by insurance, depending on your breast size, symptoms and insurance policy. Our staff will help you in this process and will submit a letter to your insurance company on your behalf. The approval process may take several weeks to a few months.
What to Expect
Breast reduction is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. You may engage in light activity on the day following surgery. Return to normal activity, including work, usually takes a week. It is normal to have swelling in your breast after surgery, which resolves gradually over a few weeks. Your breasts will feel immediately lighter in weight. Results are long lasting; however, your breasts may enlarge again if you become pregnant or gain weight.
